And now here I am, toiling away every week to bring all of you the best UTAU Ranking coverage I can, even though only a single-digit number of people actually care outside of Aster and CK. Funny how life works sometimes.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

A lot of points this week, which caused there to be very few stuff in the Extra Ranking (something that nearly made me flub up the Ranking format and made dez worry her head off about both of our sanities when I panicked). Most of the UTAU this week were of the same old crowd, though more Yufu (and Ruko~) would be nice. Still taking offense at the fact my UTAU seems to never be mentioned but this is the last week I’ll complain. If anyone can tell me what I’m doing wrong I’d appreciate it! Seriously, they pick a chainsaw and not mine?

It’s not that they pick and choose; something must’ve gone wrong in the process… anyway. Another great week. Higher scores overall is something I’m really happy with, but something to note is that although Teto didn’t claim the number one spot this week, she showed up just about everywhere else! Almost the entire first half was Tetoriffic, and her improv Momo song landed her in the top three. Looks like you can’t keep the doriru away for long…

Well, the idea is we want more diversity in the rankings. I don’t mind people using Teto and loving Teto– heck, I like Teto– as long as she’s not the only one around. The UtaRan SP ranking was released a few days ago, and most of the songs were Teto songs. Most of the top ten were Teto songs. This isn’t surprising, but it is still a bit disheartening. Still, there were a lot of old faces returning this week, and for that and the higher point values, I’d say overall, this was a pretty good week.

Speaking of the SP Ranking, we plan on bringing you coverage of that as well. There will be defeats and triumphs! Romance! Comedy! Drama! Controversy! Se– no wait, none of that… Be sure to tune in for our UtaRan SP Ranking special! (what do you mean it’s not redundant)

Higher points? I thought it went lower… Also the emergence of Vocaloid and UTAU union is still strong, and my hopes of group songs were accomplished for now. Anime Expo has announced that Ms. Asakawa is going to be their guest of honor this year! And what an honor it is, I would love to have a Luka Nendoroid autographed by her.  Anime Expo is the largest anime and manga convention in the United States and has been bringing in famous guests every year.

We move to the Rankings Watch.  First off, everyone’s favorite pencil artist is back with a bang.

On Friday (in Japan), this was 3rd in MyLists with 3,227.  Here was first (5781) and second (3374) for reference.  There’s no doubt that the B-Mod is going to be capped, but the question is how many points will be lost?

Yes, following Roshin Yukai (Meltdown) and Aku no Musume (Daughter of Evil) we finally have another Rin song which hit one million views as well on Nico Nico Douga. And it’s none other than ToraborutaP’s Kokoro, which achieved the feat on March 2nd 2010 at 18:10 hours Japan Time. For more videos on the song, information on the story behind the song and images do continue reading after the break.

The story of Kokoro speaks from the point of view of Rin (the robot) who was created by a lonely scientist. At that time it was so successful that the creation could only be called a “miracle”. But the robot is almost perfect except for one thing, she’s missing a Kokoro (Heart/Mind) and that left her unable to feel or appreciate human emotions, despite the scientist being nice and kind to her.

Many years went by and the scientist passes away while trying to make the Kokoro for her, leaving Rin all alone for several hundred years. Eventually she begins to wonder about the man who created her and decides to access his research. It was then the robot discovered the reason behind her creation and the Kokoro that the scientist has been trying to make for her.

Moved by what the scientist has done for her, she discovers her Kokoro and decides to sing on for eternity to express her gratitude for her creator. However the Kokoro was far too big for her artificial body to withstand and she broke down in the end, unable to ever work again.

Ever since the original Kokoro video was uploaded back onto Nico Nico Douga on March 3rd 2008 (that’s practically two years before it reaches the one million view count), many covers and PV versions were produced as well. And here are some of them below~

FINAL THOUGHTS:

This has been yet another week of Teto free top 3, but shame that only 1 UTAU male made it on to the main rankings. What can you do…. I am excited for next week (or the week after that) for great group songs and songs that commemorate the creation of UTAU ^^ And we figured out a sufficient schedule on our hands. So that our readers wouldn’t worry that much about the entry being late, woo. And I would like to know why Nene is dominating the rankings. Also, I would appreciate to hear more comments from our readers, to know what they are thinking about this ranking. It would help me understand lots.

…I’m still bitter about the fact they won’t let my UTAU onto the new UTAU section. Eventually I’ll die out, but it’d be nice if someone figured out what was the problem. Anyway, it’s nice to be back on and… I’d like to see more Ruko…

By the way, if I ever say that I’m saving a song and putting it on my iPod, don’t think it’ll be in there forever. I perform regular “cleans” of my iPod and most Vocaloid/UTAU songs go into the trash basket. If I really like the song though, and it’s so much that I’ll keep it forever, I will tell you. And you will know.

And now I take over! First, I have the link to the UTAU voicebank created by Aster Selene, which for reasons unknown to this troper this blogger, wasn’t listed with the new UTAU when it was first put up. The link to the video with voicebank download is here.

Second, another Teto-free top three week! Not having Teto as the number one song isn’t so much of a rarity, but not having Teto in the top three at all certainly is.

Going back to what CK was saying and what I mentioned in the intro, Nene’s popularity has just exploded. Her voicebank was released towards the end of December, and already she’s had numerous spots on the countdown, including taking the top three spots on separate occasions. This kind of popularity is unprecedented when it comes to new voicebanks.

I consider it a good thing, as we need more diversity when it comes to regulars on the countdown. It also shows that if your UTAU has that special something, then it can get recognized too. I don’t know what the special something is exactly, but Nene-chan definitely has it. Now I’m off to figure out how to cosplay as a girl that’s part plant.

On a different note, while we appreciate all our readers who give their post-publishing comments on songs, I humbly ask that you guys tone down some of the more subjective ones. If you really need to voice some negative opinions on particular songs, please make them as veiled and/or inoffensive as possible. Trust me, you can avoid a lot of unnecessary flames if you do.

The 3D Anime Olympics known as the 4th MMD Cup has now concluded and all the awards have been given out.  Over 200 people created over 11 hours of MikuMikuDance footage, which ended up being watch over 4.3 million times.  Above is what was deemed best of the best, but I think [...]]]>

In order to celebrate, we’re taking a slight tangent this week in order to highlight some of the rest of MMD Cup’s 200+ entries.

Actually, we may have to take a tangent to the tangent because there’s been . . . A MURDER!

Okay, so maybe not.  This one won two of the Judge’s Choice awards, so it can’t be that bad. Up next is the best show you won’t see.

Not as bizarre and dissonant an opening as maybe, Kurenai, but it’s attention grabbing.  Plus, any Kubrickism is a good Kubrickism.

Our next video didn’t win anything, but it’s silly, and that’s good for something.

Finally, a song that allows me to get on the happy soapbox.

See, I like this type of reinterpretations of songs.  It’s nice, simple, clean, and is free of hoopla.  It’s music composition at its core, and it’s awesome.  This is why if you find a singer-songwriter or group around your neighborhood, and they’re good, then support them as best you can.

A couple paragraphs ago, I talked about dissonance.  Our entry for the UTAU Ranking watch is an example of just that.

The fact that I despise idol pop culture makes it all the more amusing.  Meanwhile, there were a couple of good options on the Senior Circuit, so I decided to pick the one not associated with EXIT TUNES.

At 211,000 points, it has plenty of merit, and is less abrasive on my ears.  It’s not like I don’t like EXIT; I just prefer their trance.
