UTAU has been out for two whole years already… feels like just yesterday I was listening to UTAU songs on youtube (this is before I learned youtube sucked compared to NND) and wondering how people could put so much effort into something with such little chance of any gratitude or recognition being given back. And now here I am, toiling away every week to bring all of you the best UTAU Ranking coverage I can, even though only a single-digit number of people actually care outside of Aster and CK. Funny how life works sometimes.

But enough about irony. Onto the ranking!

(*there is no kana spelling given for the last name, and there are too many combination possibilities for me to feel comfortable guessing. I apologize for any inconvenience)

FINAL THOUGHTS:

A lot of points this week, which caused there to be very few stuff in the Extra Ranking (something that nearly made me flub up the Ranking format and made dez worry her head off about both of our sanities when I panicked). Most of the UTAU this week were of the same old crowd, though more Yufu (and Ruko~) would be nice. Still taking offense at the fact my UTAU seems to never be mentioned but this is the last week I’ll complain. If anyone can tell me what I’m doing wrong I’d appreciate it! Seriously, they pick a chainsaw and not mine?

It’s not that they pick and choose; something must’ve gone wrong in the process… anyway. Another great week. Higher scores overall is something I’m really happy with, but something to note is that although Teto didn’t claim the number one spot this week, she showed up just about everywhere else! Almost the entire first half was Tetoriffic, and her improv Momo song landed her in the top three. Looks like you can’t keep the doriru away for long…

Well, the idea is we want more diversity in the rankings. I don’t mind people using Teto and loving Teto– heck, I like Teto– as long as she’s not the only one around. The UtaRan SP ranking was released a few days ago, and most of the songs were Teto songs. Most of the top ten were Teto songs. This isn’t surprising, but it is still a bit disheartening. Still, there were a lot of old faces returning this week, and for that and the higher point values, I’d say overall, this was a pretty good week.

Speaking of the SP Ranking, we plan on bringing you coverage of that as well. There will be defeats and triumphs! Romance! Comedy! Drama! Controversy! Se– no wait, none of that… Be sure to tune in for our UtaRan SP Ranking special! (what do you mean it’s not redundant)

Higher points? I thought it went lower… Also the emergence of Vocaloid and UTAU union is still strong, and my hopes of group songs were accomplished for now. I’m enthusiastic about the Sp, but some of the results were not expected….Also, not many extras for the Ranking. Why would that be? last but not least, HAPPY 2ND ANNIVERSARY UTAU! -gets out the party poppers-

…but the voice of the people is also stated to be the voice of madness, which is very appropriate in the above context, really. </self-deprecation>

Anyway, so I finally got around and refurbished the article’s format a bit, figuring out how to make good use of headers (GASP!) so that I don’t abuse the BOLD-ITALICS-UNDERLINE-ALLCAPS combo… too much… I’ll stop ranting now and just move on to the charts.

I apologize for the lateness. Real Life happened… so to make up for it, comment overcrowding will be overlooked for this article.
This week’s ranking came just before Miku’s Day Thanksgiving Celebration. No matter what, there’s new songs to keep an eye on… I wonder where the songs you like will be ranked?

THIS WEEK IN HISTORY: (WVR #74 LINK HERE) This spot is for a look back at the VocaRan one year before. Here are the top five songs from that week.

H5: Still samfree…

H4: Still TOE-d’aaaaaaaaaaawwww~!!!

H3: Still Double Lariat…

H2: And finally, Synchronicity part 1… Ah, yes, what really drew me to this song is the stunning artwork (before I discovered it was a web novel).

H1: Then we have a revival of sorts since this is mostly the time when Japanese students graduate from high school. I was kinda ticked when this song forced Synchronicity into the 2nd spot, but… oh well.

#3: 初音ミク　オ リジナル曲　『 Atoms 』 (NEW) – Hmm… meh, nothing special here IMHO… Though I find it interesting that “kokoro” is rendered in the same Katakana as Rin’s KOKORO… +1 point to my meme theory.

#2: 【初音ミクdark(＋ 巡音ルカ)オリジナル曲】ウタカタ永焔鳥【PV】 (NEW) – Now this is an interesting combination: Miku’s dark append with Luka’s natural lowness… I kinda like it. Helps that the PV looks good, too. So which god does sasakure-san have to pray to to get a number one song? Seriously, even though he’s always getting into the top five… And this was really amazing work…

#1: 【初音さん】 サボテンと蜃気楼【オリジナル】 (NEW) – Awwwww… the PV is just too cute! Gonna view the entire thing now, hopefully it doesn’t have a sad ending. ;_; DARN IT!!! TT__TT I knew it… I think I know why such tear-jerking story PVs make it to the top of the WVR in their debut week. Now if you’ll excuse me, I think it’s starting to rain… My theory is if you didn’t cry even a little bit while watching the PV, you have no soul.

ED Song: 巡音ル カでオリジナル曲 「冬の幻想」 – Huh, strange. There’s an ED song, but it’s not on the MyList for this week’s chart. Can anyone else get it for me? Nevermind, found it. >_<

In Other Vocaloid News:

The genre-defying, boundary-breaking, sensational and controversial hit “magnet” has finally arrived! From minato (RyuuseiP), “magnet -favorite plus-” will be released from MOER on March 10th!

And of course, March 9th is Miku’s Day Thanksgiving Celebration! Everyone! Let’s make record numbers at the concert!

Final Thoughts/Analysis:

I think if there’s one thing that’s become evident over the course of these rankings with the new system, it’s that popular songs are a lot slower to fall. This means that if a song pops up one week and is gone the next, it was truly a one-hit wonder… whereas before, it seemed like most popular songs were destined for that fate, except for the few lucky ones that got to stick around (and possibly become regulars?).

I like this trend and I don’t. Of course I like it because it means the good songs (and the not-so-good ones that happen to become popular for whatever reason) get more time in the spotlight. I don’t like it only because it means less new songs in the top 30 each week. This is pretty much a non-issue, though, since those slots would most likely just be taken up by other returning songs anyway.

…And so with that, we end this week’s Vocaloid Ranking review. Please join us again next week, and stay tuned for the UtaRan review!

Anime Expo has announced that Ms. Asakawa is going to be their guest of honor this year! And what an honor it is, I would love to have a Luka Nendoroid autographed by her. Anime Expo is the largest anime and manga convention in the United States and has been bringing in famous guests every year.

Quote from Anime News Network:

“Yuu Asakawa has enjoyed much success over her career as a seiyuu. Her extensive list of credits include work on some of the most famous anime titles in the industry, such as the Love Hina series (Motoko Aoyama), School Rumble (Otoko Osakabe), the Vandread series (Jura Basil Elden), Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 (Priss S. Asagiri) and Azumanga Daioh (Sakaki).

If you have an idea for a future Vocaloid Spotlight and live in, or plan to visit, the Internet, send a self-addressed stamped message to my fabulous e-mail or message my Vocaforum or VocaloidOtaku accounts. All you need is a nice theme and possibly an Utatte Mita or two, like this one.

【ニコニコ動画】「Just Be Friends」を歌ってみた（halyosy ver.）

That’s it! Easy, no? :3

We move to the Rankings Watch. First off, everyone’s favorite pencil artist is back with a bang.

On Friday (in Japan), this was 3rd in MyLists with 3,227. Here was first (5781) and second (3374) for reference. There’s no doubt that the B-Mod is going to be capped, but the question is how many points will be lost?

Luna wishes she had that trouble.

【ニコニコ動画】【天音ルナ】 オリジナル曲 『アーミラリ・スフィア』 【MMD】

PikaP’s song stands at about 4k ranking points, and gets 5 times more in Awesome Name points.

Next week is my Spring Break, so I should be able to have a nice lengthy article for all y’all next week.

Yes, following Roshin Yukai (Meltdown) and Aku no Musume (Daughter of Evil) we finally have another Rin song which hit one million views as well on Nico Nico Douga. And it’s none other than ToraborutaP’s Kokoro, which achieved the feat on March 2nd 2010 at 18:10 hours Japan Time. For more videos on the song, information on the story behind the song and images do continue reading after the break.

The story of Kokoro speaks from the point of view of Rin (the robot) who was created by a lonely scientist. At that time it was so successful that the creation could only be called a “miracle”. But the robot is almost perfect except for one thing, she’s missing a Kokoro (Heart/Mind) and that left her unable to feel or appreciate human emotions, despite the scientist being nice and kind to her.

Many years went by and the scientist passes away while trying to make the Kokoro for her, leaving Rin all alone for several hundred years. Eventually she begins to wonder about the man who created her and decides to access his research. It was then the robot discovered the reason behind her creation and the Kokoro that the scientist has been trying to make for her.

Moved by what the scientist has done for her, she discovers her Kokoro and decides to sing on for eternity to express her gratitude for her creator. However the Kokoro was far too big for her artificial body to withstand and she broke down in the end, unable to ever work again.

Ever since the original Kokoro video was uploaded back onto Nico Nico Douga on March 3rd 2008 (that’s practically two years before it reaches the one million view count), many covers and PV versions were produced as well. And here are some of them below~

PV Versions:

PV as drawn by Glider.

PV as drawn by FukusanbutsuP.

PV as drawn by Hasurarin.

A 3DCG video made by BrotherP with Kio doing the 3D models.

Made by ClearTranquil, this is a live action PV based on Kokoro made by a group of students for their school project.

Fandubs:

Sung by Namakonyuruko, this cover of Kokoro is well known by the fans as the singer had added in dialogue during the intro, instrumental and ending to the original Kokoro making the song a more complete story.

Yamai and Usa sings Kokoro and Kiseki together respectively in the same melody.

Manga-style PV

A touching take on the Kokoro story showing the intimacies between the robot and scientist and how close they truly were. In this PV a mix of the original song, piano arrangement and orchestral arrangement are played throughout the slideshow.

The popularity of Kokoro was evident as even a stage play was announced for it in Japan, for more information you can go here.

Yeah! I was waiting for this when I found out that KOKORO was at 980,000++ views a couple of weeks ago, so it was only a matter of time.
Well here we are, ready for another installment of UTAU-filled goodness. Last week we saw bombshell-newcomer Nene dominate the ranking, thanks in part to some TOKOTOKO starpower. What will happen this week? Will flagship UTAU Teto reclaim her throne, or will other UTAU still get time to shine? Read on to find out!

NAMI’s OPENING STATEMENT:
Sorry for the wait. It’s time for this week’s UTAU Ranking.

Before long it’ll be March 6th, the 2nd anniversary of UTAU’s release. Like last year’s uploads, this year we have celebratory videos planned. It’s also approaching the last day of the Defoko birthday celebration.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

This has been yet another week of Teto free top 3, but shame that only 1 UTAU male made it on to the main rankings. What can you do…. I am excited for next week (or the week after that) for great group songs and songs that commemorate the creation of UTAU ^^ And we figured out a sufficient schedule on our hands. So that our readers wouldn’t worry that much about the entry being late, woo. And I would like to know why Nene is dominating the rankings. Also, I would appreciate to hear more comments from our readers, to know what they are thinking about this ranking. It would help me understand lots.

…I’m still bitter about the fact they won’t let my UTAU onto the new UTAU section. Eventually I’ll die out, but it’d be nice if someone figured out what was the problem. Anyway, it’s nice to be back on and… I’d like to see more Ruko…

By the way, if I ever say that I’m saving a song and putting it on my iPod, don’t think it’ll be in there forever. I perform regular “cleans” of my iPod and most Vocaloid/UTAU songs go into the trash basket. If I really like the song though, and it’s so much that I’ll keep it forever, I will tell you. And you will know.

And now I take over! First, I have the link to the UTAU voicebank created by Aster Selene, which for reasons unknown to <s>this troper</s> this blogger, wasn’t listed with the new UTAU when it was first put up. The link to the video with voicebank download is here.

Second, another Teto-free top three week! Not having Teto as the number one song isn’t so much of a rarity, but not having Teto in the top three at all certainly is.

Going back to what CK was saying and what I mentioned in the intro, Nene’s popularity has just exploded. Her voicebank was released towards the end of December, and already she’s had numerous spots on the countdown, including taking the top three spots on separate occasions. This kind of popularity is unprecedented when it comes to new voicebanks.

I consider it a good thing, as we need more diversity when it comes to regulars on the countdown. It also shows that if your UTAU has that special something, then it can get recognized too. I don’t know what the special something is exactly, but Nene-chan definitely has it. Now I’m off to figure out how to cosplay as a girl that’s part plant.

Weekly Vocaloid Ranking #125 “Unselected”: LINK HERE

This week, we will begin to implement a little system to avoid comment overcrowding on individual songs. This has a few exceptions of course: I will still be making the article (though I can always opt not to comment on songs), deztora will still translate Naho’s statements, and Joe Mello and/or redemtion2 can still add their 2-cents on the final thoughts/analysis section. Other than those, any editor who we catch commenting on songs without being on the “This Week’s Editors”-list will have their account promptly demoted.

On a different note, while we appreciate all our readers who give their post-publishing comments on songs, I humbly ask that you guys tone down some of the more subjective ones. If you really need to voice some negative opinions on particular songs, please make them as veiled and/or inoffensive as possible. Trust me, you can avoid a lot of unnecessary flames if you do.

NAHO’s OPENING STATEMENT:
Good evening everyone; it’s time for this week’s VocaRan.

From today on, it’s March, and that means graduation season… I think it’s time for everyone’s graduation exams to happen.

March is a time for farewells, for new meetings, for new memories to be made… Laugh, cry, have new experiences as you grow into adulthood… Beyond that, we’re waiting for the warm spring to come.

…That is, wait, now’s not the time for poetry. First let’s take it easy and watch the ranking.

The 3D Anime Olympics known as the 4th MMD Cup has now concluded and all the awards have been given out. Over 200 people created over 11 hours of MikuMikuDance footage, which ended up being watch over 4.3 million times. Above is what was deemed best of the best, but I think some congratulating should be in order for everyone who participated in another successful Cup.

In order to celebrate, we’re taking a slight tangent this week in order to highlight some of the rest of MMD Cup’s 200+ entries.

Actually, we may have to take a tangent to the tangent because there’s been . . . A MURDER!

【ニコニコ動画】【第4回MMD杯本選】UTAU事件簿-All Starts are the "M"-

Okay, so maybe not. This one won two of the Judge’s Choice awards, so it can’t be that bad. Up next is the best show you won’t see.

【ニコニコ動画】【第4回MMD杯本選】コンペイトウ星【アニメOP風PV】

Not as bizarre and dissonant an opening as maybe, Kurenai, but it’s attention grabbing. Plus, any Kubrickism is a good Kubrickism.

Our next video didn’t win anything, but it’s silly, and that’s good for something.

【ニコニコ動画】【第4回MMD杯本選】霊夢がシフトチェンジでＲＥＤ　ＺＯＮＥ

Finally, a song that allows me to get on the happy soapbox.

【ニコニコ動画】【第4回MMD杯本選】だぶるらりあっと

See, I like this type of reinterpretations of songs. It’s nice, simple, clean, and is free of hoopla. It’s music composition at its core, and it’s awesome. This is why if you find a singer-songwriter or group around your neighborhood, and they’re good, then support them as best you can.

A couple paragraphs ago, I talked about dissonance. Our entry for the UTAU Ranking watch is an example of just that.

【ニコニコ動画】【UTAU+MMD】デフォ子で『恋☆カナ』

The fact that I despise idol pop culture makes it all the more amusing. Meanwhile, there were a couple of good options on the Senior Circuit, so I decided to pick the one not associated with EXIT TUNES.

【ニコニコ動画】【初音ミク】死にたがり【オリジナル曲】

At 211,000 points, it has plenty of merit, and is less abrasive on my ears. It’s not like I don’t like EXIT; I just prefer their trance.
